WebOS? Its Web Desktop. Dammit!

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

got this in some feed. reminded me of what i had written on another bc blog sometime back. reposting here.

There has been a lot of buzz for some time now on WebOS. Its defined as virtual operating system that runs in your web browser..

If you are not totally computer illiterate, you must know the very basic definition of OS ( Operating System ) is a computer program that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer.

WebOS is not supposed to be anything of that sort. To be more precise.. it tries to mimic what a desktop does : manages files and folders, helps in running other apps easily.

If i have made my point clear, lets correct our terminology before we more forward.. lets call it ‘Web Desktop’.

Here is a nice review of 10 popular web desktops. If you have not yet tried your hands on any of the web desktops.. you must. A few of them are really cool and can become the future.

WebOS needs a browser to run into. And there is yet no clean way to run a browser without a Desktop Manager. There is not much point in going for web desktop, while you have a PC Desktop. A simple solution like syncing your files on some public server can serve the job of Desktop available from anywhere. And while you have a PC to run full ( and trendy ) Desktop, why should one go to still primitive interface of web desktop. The point i want to make is that there is not a environment for a web desktop yet.

But.. still webdesktop is the future. But different than the current form. There is need of thin OS first.. which allows one to run a web desktop directly on a very low end machine. This will allow reducing the cost and size of the desktop ( or laptop ). And a good internet (wifi) ofcourse.

Web Desktop will not be able to enter mainstream if the problem is not approached from three directions simultaneously : Web Desktop, thin OS, and light hardware. This will probably happen only if a single organization pack all of it into a single package.

black moments

moments that
i would like to forget completely about.
but will forever regret about.

its a difficult feeling, different feeling.
the uncertainty is even more killing.
its hard to live in doubt.
its sick when i try to think optimistically.
its horrible when i assume the worst.

i could look back at my life
and laugh about most terrible moments.
but not anymore.

it shouldn’t have happened.
i don’t even know who to say sorry to.
had i believed in god,
it would have been relaxing to talk to.

what to do, when one can’t answer the questions rising in his mind.

just can hope to learn a lot from it.

based upon a nightmare, which was unfortunately real.

i have no major secrets in life, but this one will probably remain for a long time. until i learn to laugh about it.

PS: The post was kept private till Sep 2nd.

A desperate EULA

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

I got this offer in my inbox from nowhere. I did walk through it, as long it looked simple.

After a few clicks, I ended up at this page (strangely the link is readable without going through all the process), which seemed somehow very strange to me. A desperate EULA(kindof).
It reads : “Please do not say “NO” now!” , with a bigger “Yes” button.
I wonder if it was really really important to show this page (by law), even though its not a “I agree” kindof page.

And I didn’t click YES.

The one with the missed flight

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

A post in the memory of July 31st night bliss, and for missing the morning flight.

I was there as planned, about 25mins before departure, but they didn’t allow me to board. rules, they said. For sure, had nothing to do with the bliss factors.

Was in Bangalore, and Hyderabad for few days. Was nice to see Unni after long, and Majj too. Was too nice to be with iiit (ms) buddies for a while. Miss you guys.

Watching FRIENDS these days, finally. From scratch. Reached 308. The one with flashback was superb. Had left watching friends in college after ross and raschel had a split. btw, hence the title.
Also watching ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy. its nice.
Just returned from ‘Chakde! India’. Nice movie. They have completely hacked the human mind, for making feel good movies. SRK did fine job. I was developing a stereotype image for him otherwise.
