Shekhar Kapur : The Magic of Technology in Films
Interactive session with Shekhar Kapur @ TiE Bangalore. I was lucky to be a part of it as i was in Bangalore for a official trip.
Shekhar Kapur is cool. I like him. He is a thinker.
He talked for a short while only, and moved to questions seeions. He didnt talk about anything in particular and most of the talk was about his futuristic views, of entertainment industry. Following are the points i can recall from the session -
* Entertainment is the emotional interface between Technology and Customers. [ Entertainment means Movies, Music, Video Games, Mobile Games etc ]
* Technology and Entertainment moves hand in hand. The face of entertainment is determined by the state of the technology.
* When cinema moved from Speechless to Speech enabled movies, it was viewed as end of cinema, and similarly for Black-n-White to coloured. Cinema never died. Artists died but cinema died.
* Limitation of the Technology creates an Artist. In speechless movies speech was the limit, and a few people got art of performing in speechless movies. But advance in technology gave speech to movies, and the artists of mute movies died and new artists were born.
* 99.999999… of us havent seen Amitabh Bachan in real. We have either known him in movies, on TV, or through news, or through others. Isnt it possible to create a virtual character. 10 people can sit, and make news of him.. like today be got cold.. he is in affair etc.. etc.
* Technology gives _freedom_. When radio was first released, I felt freedom. I could carry it anywhere and listen to music. Same thing is happening with TV. It will become portable. I will not need to sit in front of a box to see news etc.
* In future movies will be viewed from mobile devices / PSPs. Movie will be released as clips of 10 mins. Content providers will provide these clips. And customers will not see a movie at a stretch. They will see parts of 10 mins, whenever they want. And content providers will get their revenues when users will download these clips. Such revenues will be huge, millions of users downloading clips.
* We will be connected to a virtual world all the time. From the time we wake up till we sleep. While travelling in car, plane. Anytime.
* Technology allows us do more parallel processing.
* I love Machintosh. When Microsoft had that stupid interface.. DOS, i got emotionally attached with Mach.
* In future phone calls will become free, and what users will pay for is entertainment. And it will not come through current connection providers. It will come through content providers. Content providers will offer their services and give free phone facility as an addon.
