I OBJECT : Paheli vs Black

Paheli is india’s entry for the 2006 Oscars. link

wtf.. of all movies Paheli.. that too when Black is there..

i havent seen paheli.. i didnt consider it worth watching.. it might be good but it cant be anywhere near Black, I am sure. I just cant understand what makes them select Paheli. Why Paheli was hyped too much even before release.

I am disturbed, hurt, senti, sad, broken… I will probably watch Paheli and then then write more.

Ask Amitabh or Rani who have worked in both, or SRK or Amol Palekar.. they all will probably say Black.. Black is a masterpiece.

I cant take this.
I OBJECT. Anyone willing to join me ??

    count me in ..
I was also wondering. BLACK was made only for Oscars then y Paheli ?
Can they still change their decision ?

    Re:
I certainly find some logic. Paheli represents India better than all the other movies on the list. It represents that Rajasthani culture, a story from the Indian literature that is simple.

As far as Black is considered, in my frank opinion, it is a good movie, but I find there are Hollywood movies on similar lines which are more appealing to me.

Whenever a foreign film is nominated, one of the important requirements of the film is to represent the culture or a thought from which the movie is coming. I certainly feel that Paheli is the one which has greater scope than any of the other nominations.

    I agree with pranav …
… i think the indianness is always an important factor (remember lagaan showing indian village). I am assuming that reviewers are non-indians … and that they still see india as a rural country, which is true to a large degree.

However i too feel that Black was a far better movie. but sometimes you have to live with such choices …

    Re:
i have seen both paheli and black.. and i’d any day prefer black.
after sitting for what seemed like an eternity during paheli, i realized that only half an hour had passed.. at the 45 mins juncture, i could not hear any dialoges (actually i was happy i could not hear any of them) as everyone in theater was so bored that all were chattering away..
if boredom is a criteria for selecting any movie to the oscars, paheli has my vote!

Black vs Hollywood movies on similar lines
I Believe Black can do well against any Hollywood movie.. I didnt see anything great this year.. that could compete Black.

fker Indians.. I suggest Sanjay Leela Bhansali to go to HollyWood.. I am sure Sixth Sense would had never made it to Oscars if Shyamalan had made it here.

Cmon …. Paheli was on the negative scale as far as Oscars are concerned …. Black was the movie made to be at Oscars…..YES I agree with the Indianness thing but then Paheli will compensate by being so so movie…… let there be Black its an awesome piece of work……

    @Paheli suppoters
I agree Paheli truly represents Indianness … the rural india and our culture and other greatness(if u think it so) abt India. But dont u think we shud see movies and culture in different perspective ?? I mean is it always necessary to just stick to our “vibrant n colorful culture” in each and every movie ??
I m not denying its importance but my point is y cant we hav a culutre in movies itself ?? Y cant we think of adding verstality to our movies ??

    paheli / black
paheli is a story “duvidha” from a folktale part of rajasthani folklore. it presents india in its complete vibrant colors and its hues and all the emotions. and think of the ending where the wife chooses to be with the ghost! thats a progressive thought without at all compromising on our own ethos. when we think india is a regressive culture!

as for black, it might be a good movie, but sadly i could never connect with it. And, its a frame to frame copy of “The Miracle Worker”, a far superior product. I never felt i was watching an indian movie; and SLB conveniently makes the family Anglo-Indian to make the plagiarism easy!

Third, I wish “Swades” had gone to the oscars or “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi”. Swades was awesomely beautiful and it had a heart and a great spirit to go with!

    Black Black Black ..
The selection of Paheli is a paheli to me … Ya the indian ness was there .. but they have played with the story.. it was looking like another nautanki that we see in some parts of Bihar or UP.. only in this case the clothes were different ..

and the acting of all stars sucked big time in Paheli ..
the only reason which I see for not inclusion of Black is that probably they didnt find too many colors to fit into their moods ..

Yeah Swades is a great movie concept wise and Shahrukh has tried to deliever his best .. but still Amitabh’s best is better than Shahrukh’s best ..

havent seen “Hazaar Khwahishen.. ” no comment on that

    Iqbal
i have not seen Iqbal, but it got raving reviews. from what i read, i think even that movie was better then paheli.
    anyone has seen it?

  11. utkarsh Says:

    I have
    Seen Black / Iqbal .. both ..
Blcak is zillion times better than Paheli ( which I have’nt seen btw .. but it cn’t beat Black ), while it can’t be compared with Iqbal . which is definately not in Oscar league ..

  12. paggi Says:

    BLACK blacks out Paheli
Say whatever u may .. but Black is one gr8 movie.

I dont see why does the “indianness” issue springs up here. A lot of movie get selected for the “foreign film category” and they dont look for culture or regional vividness or colourfulness. A good storyline and some acting /direation is what is scored on.
and accord to me Black beats out paheli on all the marks.

  13. rajiv Says:

    why paheli not black
friends i think paheli was a total shit < i m a shahrukh fan but i can't lie > and black was the ultimate hit in all ways performence screenplay camera work and all.
i being an indian wish that paheli can be proved better in oscar awards but i can say that black is still the best choice for oscar.

  14. dimple Says:

    black any day
was so shocked wen i heard paheli is nominated fr oscars.. i have seen both paheli and black and i feel black was our best bet fr oscars..paheli is good, i dont deny that ,it has its own unique qualities but performance wise it was nowhere near black..maybe cos the characters dint demand that.. T MOVE AN AUDIENCE EMOTIONALLY AND GET THEM THINKING I SAY BLACK ANY DAY!!!

  15. Raj Says:

    Black sucks
I tell you the reason. Black can no way stand in front of Paheli. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, I have seen his several movies. He is showing nothing morethen glamour in his movie. He ruins theim. I hurt when he modified Devdas and showed stupidity instead of reality. Same with hum dil de chuke sanam and all others. He is good showman. He knows what immature yuth wants to see. But I believe, he is insulting art of movie making.
